Melamine Door Surface, Structure and Applications

Melamine doors are made with decorative paper impregnated with melamine resin. During production, the paper is hot-pressed onto a board surface to form the finished panel. MDF, particleboard, and plywood are among the substrates used for this type of door. The color and pattern come from the decorative paper, so there is no need for a separate painting process.

One reason this finish is used in interior door production is its everyday practicality. The surface can handle normal contact and is resistant to common scratches, wear, heat, and stains. Dust and ordinary marks are also relatively easy to remove. For apartments, offices, and projects with many doors, having a consistent finish across different rooms can be useful.

Surface Designs

There is no single look associated with a melamine door. Some projects use wood grain patterns to bring a warmer feel to the room. Others call for plain colors, especially in offices and modern residential interiors. Fabric textures and stone patterns provide further choices when a standard wood look is not suitable.

The surface itself can be matte, high-gloss, or embossed with a wood grain texture. These finishes look and feel different, even when the color is similar. It is a good idea to check a physical sample before confirming a large order, particularly when several doors need to match the furniture or wall finishes in the same project.

Panel Materials and Door Core

The decorative surface is only part of the finished door. The panel substrate and internal filling determine how the door is put together. MDF, HDF, particleboard, and plywood can be used as substrate materials, according to the selected construction.

Three core filling options are available for different door configurations:

• Honeycomb paper: Keeps the door construction lightweight and is commonly used for economical interior doors.
• Tubular chipboard: Its hollow internal structure provides support across the door leaf.
• Finger-jointed solid wood strips: Provides a more substantial filling structure.

The surrounding frame can be made from LVL or finger-jointed fir. It forms the supporting structure around the filling material. The core and frame are usually considered together when deciding on the finished door construction.

Edge Finishing and Cleaning

The panel edges are finished with melamine or PVC edge banding. Available thicknesses include 0.6 mm and 1.0 mm. The banding can follow the color and pattern of the door surface, so the edges do not look noticeably different from the front panel.

Day-to-day care is simple. A soft cloth is usually enough for dust and light marks. For more noticeable dirt, use a suitable mild cleaner and wipe the surface dry. The decorative finish does not need repainting after installation. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, and do not leave water sitting around the edges.

Material and Emission Requirements

E0, E1, and CARB P2-compliant board options can be requested for projects with formaldehyde emission requirements. These grades concern the wood-based substrate, so the actual board specification matters. The required grade and supporting test documents should be agreed upon before production.

The finished surface is designed to resist everyday scratches, abrasion, heat, and stains. However, the actual result depends on the selected decorative paper, substrate, and production process. Where a project has particular performance requirements, these should be confirmed with the manufacturer rather than assumed from the surface appearance alone.

Where Melamine Doors Are Used

These doors are found in more than residential interiors. Office buildings, schools, student housing, government facilities, and budget hotels are also common project settings. In furniture production, the same decorative finish can be used for cabinets and wardrobes to keep the overall design consistent.

Hospitals, clinics, and laboratories may also use melamine-faced products, provided the selected door construction meets the facility's cleaning and material requirements. The surface finish alone should not be treated as proof of antibacterial or medical-grade performance.

For ordinary residential use, bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices are suitable locations. Standard melamine door configurations are intended for dry indoor conditions. Bathrooms and kitchens need more care because moisture can affect the panel and its edges over time. If doors are required for these areas, moisture-resistant materials and suitable edge protection should be discussed before ordering.
